We Are All Connected | The Stuff We’re Made Of — Channeling with Willow

One of the things I love about channeling The Band is that a conversation can begin with something very ordinary and open into something much larger. This month, it began with a simple comment: “A rock is a rock.”

The idea was that a rock is dependable. It does not try to be something else. It simply is. From there, The Band began asking a much bigger question: How different are we, really?

They spoke about rocks, trees, water, animals, human beings, buildings, glass, and even the things we create from the materials of the Earth. Different forms. Different expressions. But underneath, all arising from the same basic stuff.

Then the message moved from the physical to the human. Beneath our different bodies, backgrounds, beliefs, and personalities, we share many of the same needs. We want love. We want safety. We want to be understood. We want connection, shelter, nourishment, and some sense that we belong.

That does not erase our differences. And it does not mean we have to agree with everyone or accept every behavior. But it does invite us to look through a different pair of eyes.

The Band offered a question that has stayed with me: “How are we similar?”

Imagine carrying that question into your day. The difficult neighbor. The stranger in the grocery store. The person whose opinions make you want to walk away. The older person moving slowly in front of you. The child having a hard moment. Before deciding who they are, ask: How are we similar?

One practice I have found myself doing is looking at an older person and wondering what they were like as a child. Did they ride a bicycle? Run through a yard? Have a favorite toy? Get frightened in the dark? Laugh until they could not breathe? It changes something when we remember that every person has carried an entire lifetime inside them.

The Band was not asking us to become naive. They were asking us to become more conscious of where we place our attention. When we focus only on difference, separation grows louder. When we also look for common ground, something else becomes possible.

Perhaps that is where change begins — not with pretending we are all identical, but with remembering that beneath all the ways we differ, we belong to the same existence.

Today, try the question for yourself: How are we similar?

You may be surprised by what you begin to see.
